Day 17 - Merritt to Jasper, AB

This morning the winds were calm. Rain had moved through overnight and the bike was very wet. Rob dried off the seats and windshield and loaded the trailer. The weather apps all indicated a cloudy but dry day with a chance of rain in Jasper around 2 or 3pm. Temps in the morning were 55F and expected to stay in the low 60s all day.

We ate breakfast and headed out continuing north along Highway 5. The roads were slightly damp in the morning but they quickly dried as we headed north. The clouds this morning were very low and obscured our view of the tops of the mountains.

Highway 5 is extremely scenic, easily one of the more scenic highways we have ridden.

After about 1.5 hours, we stopped for a quick leg stretcher and a fuel top off. The remaining 1.5 hours to lunch (at the Grill Blue River) we ran into a little drizzle. Not enough to worry about putting on rain gear but enough to wet the road and windshield.

After lunch we continued north on Highway 5 before turning east on Canada 16. We rode through Mount Robson National Park and ran into more drizzle. All told, we had about 6 rain episodes lasting between 2 to 10 minutes each. Two of the rain episodes were quite heavy but fortunately relatively brief.

Shortly after entering Jasper National Park, we had to stop and wait for road construction. While we waited for the approximately 8 minutes, Mother Nature decided to rain on us again. Michele looked in the trailer for her small umbrella but couldn’t find it so we just sat in the ran waiting for the road to open.

We ducked into downtown Jasper for a fuel top off. Rob was on his last 1.5 gallons and Michele was having anxiety attacks of running out of fuel.

It was a quick but VERY scenic 35 miles from downtown Jasper to our cabin in East Jasper. The combination of jagged mountains and lakes/rivers was breathtaking.

While Michele and Jerry were checking in with the front office for our cabin reservation, Rob waited outside on the bike. He noticed movement to his left in a grove of bushes about 25 feet away. It was a small black bear. He managed to grab his camera and snap a few pictures of the bear as it feasted on the berry bushes.

Tomorrow we head for the Ice Fields Parkway towards Banff.
